A $35 product costing $11 to make, with $4 of absorbed shipping and Shopify Payments' standard 2.9% + flat fee, comes out to a $19 per-unit margin (53%). Add a $39/mo Basic plan and $58/mo in apps, spread across 150 units sold a month, and the true margin drops to $18 (52%) once fixed costs are amortized per unit. Methodology
Per-unit margin is sale price minus cost of goods, minus the payment processing fee (sale price × processing rate, plus a flat per-transaction fee), minus any absorbed shipping cost. Fixed costs - your Shopify plan and app subscriptions - are amortized per unit by dividing their monthly total by your estimated monthly units sold, then subtracted from per-unit margin to get the true margin after fixed costs.

Frequently asked questions
Does this include Shopify's transaction fees for third-party payment gateways?
Not directly. This calculator models Shopify Payments' standard rate (a percentage plus a small flat fee per transaction). If you use a third-party gateway instead, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee on top of that gateway's own processing fee - enter your effective combined rate in the processing fee field to approximate it.
How do I find my actual Shopify Payments rate?
Your exact rate depends on your plan, your country, and whether the card is domestic or international. Check Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin, or Shopify's published pricing page, for the rate that applies to your store - then enter it here instead of the default.
Should shipping be included if I charge the customer for it separately?
No - leave the shipping field at $0 if the customer pays for shipping as a separate line item at checkout, since that cost is already covered by what they pay. Only enter a per-unit shipping cost here if you absorb it yourself (e.g. "free shipping" you're funding out of the sale price).
How many apps is "too many" before they eat my margin?
There's no fixed number - it depends entirely on your sales volume. A $100/mo app stack is negligible at 1,000 units a month but can quietly erase your entire margin at 20 units a month. Watch the "fixed cost per unit" figure above: if it's climbing toward your per-unit margin, it's time to audit which apps you actually use.
